Only authorized trucks allowed in downtown, says SPTC

Road infrastructure works continue in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, as the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) advances upgrades across key areas. As part of these efforts, the council has been transporting materials to the San Marcos Subdivision. It is reminding the public that any large trucks (including dump and sand trucks) seen in the downtown area are authorized for these works.

Lobster Exports Among Key Drivers of Belize’s Economic Growth in 2025

During a presentation by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) on March 25th, lobster exports were identified as a major contributor to the national economy's growth in 2025. However, in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, fishermen reported a decline in the number of large lobsters throughout the season.

Caye International Bank (CIB) President Dr. Luigi Wewege recently met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during the latter’s official visit to Panama. President Steinmeier’s regional tour, held from March 16th to 20th, included stops in Panama, Guatemala, and Mexico, focusing on strengthening economic ties, trade, and democratic cooperation.

Family claims wrong suspect charged in San Pedro triple murder

The family of 22-year-old San Pedro fisherman Shelby Jonathan Hernandez, who has been charged in connection with a triple murder on the island, is disputing the allegations, claiming police have arrested the wrong person. Hernandez has been charged with the fatal shooting of Karim Nazim Espat, 28, Oscar Modesto Mas, 35, and Honduran national Yerlin Marisol Bueso Alvarez, 21. He has since been arraigned and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court hearing, scheduled for May 27, 2026.

Police increase presence and operations in San Pedro following triple murder

Following a triple murder on Thursday, March 19th, one mile south of downtown San Pedro, police presence on the island has increased with reinforcements from the mainland. The victims, Karim Espat, 29, Oscar Modesto Mas, 35, and 21-year-old Honduran national Yerlin Marisol Bueso Alvarez, were gunned down just before 10PM inside a residence. Police said on Friday, March 20th, that a possible motive is an ongoing rivalry related to drugs.

Police detain suspects in San Pedro triple murder

Police have identified three suspects in connection with the triple murder that occurred on Thursday night, March 19th, south of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. Authorities responded to a shooting incident at a location known as Mosquito Coast, where they discovered the lifeless bodies of Karim Nazim Espat, 29, and Oscar Modesto Mas, 35, inside an elevated wooden house. A third victim, identified as Honduran national Yerlin Marisol Bueso Alvarez, was found injured. She was transported to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, but later succumbed to her injuries.

John Briceño, who also serves as Minister of E-Governance, participated in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) alongside Federation President Jamie Usher and VEX Robotics representatives. The event attracted students, including those from Belize High School (BHS), who demonstrated live robots.

San Pedro Tiger Sharks suffer first loss in NEBL

On Saturday, March 28th, the San Pedro Tiger Sharks recorded their first loss in the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL), falling 88-74 to the Belize City Defenders. The island team battled through all four quarters, but the Defenders maintained control in the final period to secure the win.

San Pedro welcomes 2026 with New Year’s Eve celebrations

San Pedro Town ushered in 2026 with a New Year’s Eve celebration at Saca Chispas Field on Tuesday, December 31, beginning at 10PM. The event was organized by the San Pedro Town Council and featured DJ Jash and the Gilharry-7 Band as the main entertainers, and a fireworks display at midnight. The festivities transformed the Hon. Louis Sylvestre Sporting Arena, commonly known as Saca Chispas Field, into a lively hub of music and celebration. Live DJ sets carried through the night, drawing residents and visitors alike to dance under the stars as anticipation built toward the midnight countdown.

SPRCS showcases student talent in Christmas show

San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School (SPRCS) held its annual Christmas Variety Show on Saturday, December 6th, filling the Rafael Angel Nuñez Auditorium at San Pedro High School with music, dances, and holiday storytelling. Parents, students, teachers, and community members gathered from 4PM onward to enjoy 29 performances from Infant One to Standard Six.
