After serving 7 years of a lifetime prison sentence, Francis “Chino” Eiley has been freed. He arrived on the island, much to the joy of his family and friends, who welcomed him with open arms, emotional tears and lots of love.
Chino’s lifetime sentence was overturned by the Privy Council in London. He, along with two other men, Ernest Savery and Lenton Polonio were convicted of the November 2nd, 2002 murder of 62-year-old Justo Jairo “Galento” Perez. They were officially sentenced to life in prison on August 13th, 2004. After their original appeal was overturned, they turned to the Privy Council wherein a panel of 5 judges heard their case.
On Wednesday morning (November 4th, 2009) in Her Majesty in Council, Chief Judge Lord Phillip handed down its decision overturning the conviction. According to one of their attorneys, Antoniette Moore, “all three men will be released after being imprisoned for seven years. They were unfairly, unsafely and unsatisfactorily convicted of murder without sufficient evidence.”
