Taxi permits cannot be sold

Share

Taxi cabs are a source of transportation in San Pedro Town. It has been brought to The San Pedro Sun’s attention that various local taxi drivers attempt to sell their taxi permits, when selling their vehicles. The questions is, ‘is that legal?’ A call to the San Pedro Traffic Department led to the confirmation that taxi permits are nontransferable and thus, cannot be sold.SPTC Transport New Taxi Regulations WEB-1
According to Chris Nuñez, Head of the San Pedro Traffic Department (SPTD), the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is not entertaining anymore taxi permits. This is an effort to alleviate the number of cabs on the island. “Since SPTC are not giving out any more permits, people are disregarding that and still end up buying or renting permits from those who hold valid taxi permits. You see cases when people rent taxi cabs, along with a permit that is not in their name, and this is illegal. You have to get your own permit to run a taxi, because it is simply not transferable,” said Nunez.
The SPTD also mentioned that those who applied for the permit should be the one driving the cab and taxi drivers are not allowed to rent vehicles to other individuals. With traffic congestion a major problem in San Pedro, the excessive number of taxis is a growing problem. The SPTD and the SPTC are aware of the many illegal activities that taxi drivers partake in, and will revoke permits from those caught violating these regulations. The public is also welcome to question taxi drivers about their credentials as safety measures.
If you need further clarification on the matter, please contact the traffic department at 226-2936 or call the town council at 226-2998. You may also contact the police at 206-2022 to report invalid or false taxi permits.
