Team Belize considered a winner in many aspects!
Sunday's World Cup game between Belize and Mexico was a triumphant return of football in the international stage for Belize. And although Mexico began their World Cup qualifying campaign with an unconvincing 2-0 win on Sunday. Belize's warriors, facing their neighbors for the first time, held out for over an hour before #9 Carlos Vela scored at the 66th minute and #16 Jared Borgetti who scored a penalty in the 90th minute to save Mexico.
Sunday's much anticipated game meant more to Belizeans than any other game played before. For the first time, Belize had made it past the pesky first round, and faced a worthy opponent. That opponent, Mexico, who ranked number fourteen, had many fanatics guaranteeing up to 8 goals in the first half. Belize was described as a poor nation, lacking resources to pony up top quality players, but little did they know Belize would be seen in a whole new light and given the respect they deserve. Belize, ranked at Number 172, mostly played back and rarely pushed more than three forwards to the front line, but hung around until Mexico's Carlos Vela found the net from 2 yards out in the 66th minute. Belize goalkeeper Shane Orio who played an impressive game, blocked three shots in the first 25 minutes, including a leaping block of a power shot up the middle by Andres Guardado. Orio also stopped a close-in shot from the right side by Fernando Arce in the 39th minute and ended with seven saves for the game. Mexico attempted 21 shots at goal and 17 corner kicks, displaying a strong attack, but came up empty on several scoring opportunities in the first half. Mexico didn't get any scores out of its offence: the first was off a set kick, and the second at minute 90th was off a penalty kick in stoppage time. Mexico's surprising offensive futility has been the subject of scrutiny in the Mexican television stations. The exact number of fans who attended was 51,105.
Our associates at 7News spoke to FFB President, Bertie Chimilio after the game to get his reaction. "We shocked the world today. We gave away 2 goals to Mexico. Mexico did not do anything to win. We made mistakes and for that, for an amateur team, I am very proud of my boys, but we have made our mark. I could leave football now because this was my dream. My dream was to leave a mark for South Africa 2010. My work is done. I can continue but my work is done. My dream has been fulfilled. Those who want to take over football can take it after this. After my term is done in 2010, I think I can retire because my dream is done. We won a World Cup series. We advanced to the next round and we gave the biggest team in CONCACAF trouble today (Sunday)."
For Belizeans however, it was a victory over the cynics, who, not knowing what Belizean players are capable of, spoke too much too soon. There is one more game left, and the general sentiment is that even if Belize is eliminated in the second round by Mexico, Belize is still a winner! They will have proven a point: that even if the opponent is the almighty Mexico, that opponent still had to work for their victory. And despite the poor light shed on Belize by the Mexican Media, Belize is gracious enough to cheer on Mexico's team further into the future. Because that is just how Belizeans are!
The teams will play the second match of their second-round World Cup qualifying series Saturday in Monterrey, Mexico starting at 7:00 p.m. The squad with the highest aggregate score advances to CONCACAF semifinals.
GO TEAM BELIZE!!!
