Of the 57 graduates, a record 21 were honor roll students.

The San Pedro High School (SPHS) completed yet another milestone this past weekend. Held over the course of two days, SPHS's 33rd Graduation Commencement exercises were celebrated two-fold. On Saturday, June 14th, 2008, students' graduation rings were blessed in the church ceremony. On Sunday, June 15th, 2008, a total of 57 proud scholars entered the R. Angel Nuñez Auditorium to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance to complete their final day as students of San Pedro High. Clocking in at just under 3 1/2 hours, the graduation ceremony was a celebration of outstanding students and the staff of SPHS.

Eni Gonzalez was Mistress of Ceremonies for the commencement exercises, which began with the National Anthem and School Song, and was followed by a warm welcome speech by Salutatorian Shandelli Smith, honor roll student. After her heart-felt address, it was time to award the graduates their diplomas, which were distributed by the school's Acting Principal Emil Vasquez and Chairlady of the Board, Martha Guerrero. The diplomas represented hard work, dedication, and sacrifice - all of which paid off. Students were positively euphoric upon receiving that much coveted diploma.

The Outstanding Senior Award was given to Eni Gonzalez; Athlete of the Year was awarded to Robin Gillett and Student of the Year was awarded to Sherry Lynn Bodden. Good Conduct and highest marks awards were also handed out to those who performed exceptionally well, while maintaining good behavior.

Next up to the podium was Acting Principal Emil Vasquez, who gave the annual report and address. In his report, he mentioned the trial by fire he endured, as he was unexpectedly called to take on the role of principal during a most trying time: the apparent onslaught of not one, but two hurricanes. He thanked his family and staff for helping him during those moments, and expressed his eagerness to continue working as official Principal for the next school year.

Guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Angel Nuñez who was the principal of SPHS for 32 years, and in his speech, aimed at "arousing the curiosity" of all present, with his take on "pregnancy". He encouraged all present to use the "cycle method" in place of condoms and pills, negating their effectiveness, stating that there is only one day of the month in which a woman can get pregnant. Parents were also asked to encourage their children not to date seriously, and to only allow casual dating.

Following said speech, the school proudly announced the graduating class's valedictorian, Ms. Alice Huang. She reminisced on her four years at high school, and acknowledged that her last couple of years really helped her open up to creating bonds that are now unbreakable with her fellow classmates. She encouraged the graduates to aim high, and always try their best. Huang thanked her friends and family for giving her great memories to treasure and cherish in the coming years.

As a token of appreciation and only done in San Pedro High, the parents received a special rose in a most emotional ceremony that was held especially in their honor. The candle light ceremony ensued and was conducted by honor roll graduates, Darwin Tabora and Cindy Salgado, who excelled in their marks throughout their four years at high school. Last but not least was Risela Rivero, who for four consecutive years, maintained an average of over 90% and thus honor roll status gave the Vote of Thanks. She thanked everyone for their encouragement and well wishes, as they now embark on bigger tasks.

Congratulations to the San Pedro High School 2008 graduates and good luck on all your future endeavors!!
