It has become a tradition and the first event organized by incoming Lions’ Presidents each year. This year was no different and Lion President Eiden Salazar took the challenge head on and the day proved to be a fantastic success. Children from the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired (BCVI) arrived on San Pedro Town ready to enjoy a fun day in the sun. Summer Camp 2008 brought 26 blind and/or visually impaired children ranging in the ages two to eighteen (2-18) together at the Boca del Rio Park.
Arriving shortly after 10:00 a.m. the kids, along with family members and BCVI staff were transported to the park where they had the opportunity of enjoying swimming in the sea and basking in the sun. The visitors to “La Isla Bonita” were treated to a delicious rice and beans lunch, sodas, ideals, cup cakes and golf cart rides through the sandy/cobblestoned streets of the island, before heading back home.
BCVI Summer Camps include mainland stays and an outing to San Pedro. During the camp, children learn reading and writing either in print or Braille. The first Summer Camp was held in 1997 at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve, southwest from Dangriga in the Stann Creek District, about 10 miles away from any settlement.
In keeping with the educational aspect of the camps, in 2004, for the first time, the children’s stay was extended to include an extra week, during which they lodged in Belize City at the Stella Maris School. The participants took part and continue to take part in everything from arts and crafts to computer training. With the help of the screen-reading computer software program Jaws, students were able to read and write e-mail as well as Microsoft Word documents.
