Week three of the RF&G Cup Tournament brought the northern stars of Nizhee Corozal to the Ambergris Stadium for a showdown against the resurging Dolphins squad. Let’s get into the thick of things and recap this week’s semi-pro football action.
As per usual, the Dolphins came out using all their big guns early in the game as in minute thirteen Emory Nunez strikes to take the lead and bashed one in for the home team 1-0. There were plenty of opportunities for goal but the team failed to capitalize on them and the first goal would set the trend for the rest of the first half heading into intermission. In the second half, things started to get a bit discombobulated for the Dolphins as Corozal Nizhee were planning an attack. At minute sixty four, Julio Valla comes up successful as he unleashed a big shot that heads straight at goal tying the scoreboard at one apiece. Backed up by its Corozal home fans and their loud drums, the Stadium erupted and cheers and screams permeated thru the air. This was football at its best! Later in the game, an error committed by the Dolphins prompted Dennis Benavides of Corozal to step up and take a penalty shot. He wasted no time in recording the team’s second goal and possible game winner. Without losing their composure, the Dolphins tried to regroup and set up shop for the equalizer but could not get past the durable Corozal defenders. Overall a good effort on the islanders part, but not good enough to pull off the victory, Nizhee Corozal continued in its winning streak and at the final whistle collected a 2-1 big “W”.
In other results from around the league, an exciting encounter at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk, the Sugar Boys Juventus got its first win of the season by jolting Georgetown Ibayani 4-3. Over at the Norman Broaster, defending champions Hankook Verdes hosted FC Belize but continued to struggle as the game ended in a stalemate 1-1. Over at the Carl Ramos, the LLagulei which means “roots” hosted the Benque DC United in a showdown down south. But this game was just another walk in the park for the “Roots” squad as they improved their season record to three straight wins with a 4-0 bombing of the Benque crew. And at the MCC grounds, the Belize Defense Force blanked the Wagiya out of their home turf with a 5-0 shelling of the Wagiya crew.
