Ursel Martinez is the new building inspector.

With a big boom in the construction world, the Ambergris Caye Local Building Authority (ACLBA) has recruited the services of Ursel Martinez as Building Inspector. Holding an Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology from the University of Belize, Martinez became Inspector effective Monday, October 6th, 2008.

As Building Inspector, Martinez’ responsibilities include ensuring that the building rules are being adhered to, that construction sites are being handled by a licensed contractor, that the plans which are being worked on have been previously approved by the Board, and that all correct protocol is being followed.

At the moment, one of the pressing issues is gathering complete data as to how many construction sites are taking place around Ambergris Caye at the present moment and in which areas they are taking place on.

The heavy rains and weather that the country has been experiencing lately has deterred Martinez’s work somewhat. However, in the past two weeks some problems have been encountered. These include: construction taking place without a proper plan, height not being adhered to and construction directly on boundary lines (see box below).

Martinez believes that he is qualified for the job and that his expertise will come in good use at the ACLBA office. For questions, comments or concerns, contact Martinez at the offices of the San Pedro Town Council or call (226) 2198. If out on the field, kindly leave a message with ACLBA secretary Dalia Alamilla.
