Once at the park, a back hoe and driver, donated by David Mitchell, were used to scoop up and dispose of a large, collapsed palapa along with other trash accumulated from the park.

The volunteers collected over 250 bags (55 gallons each) of trash and the group consisted of approximately 35 children and adults.

What a success - and what a difference the cleanup made!

On Sunday, October 16th, members of the South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch (SACNW) and volunteers who live in the area organized a neighborhood clean-up that began at Victoria House and finished at the southern end of the island, a span of four and a half miles. Volunteers included full time and part-time residents, land owners and others who all love the area and were happy to assist in cleaning up the beach and parallel road. The volunteers collected over 250 bags (55 gallons each) of trash and the group consisted of approximately 35 children and adults. The task took a full four hours with the clean-up brigade ending at the Lion’s Mosquito Coast Park.

Once at the park, a back hoe and driver, donated by David Mitchell, were used to scoop up and dispose of a large, collapsed palapa along with other trash accumulated from the park. The process filled a San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) dump truck four times. SPTC provided the dump truck, the driver and a quantity of garbage bags. Mr. Joe Lawrence, owner of Rite-way Construction, donated the use of a delivery truck that hauled seven loads of garbage to the dump and some Rite-way employees, as well as ADU police officer P.C. Jones were on-hand to offer assistance as well. One SACNW member, Amanda Syme, commented, “We are all pleased with the number of volunteers that showed up and the fact that we packed about 250 bags of trash and sent it to the dump is wonderful. What a success - and what a difference it has made!”

An “after party” was held at Mr. Joe’s Store and Deli where the hungry crowd devoured hot dogs and cold beverages. During the gathering, plans were discussed for the upcoming “Family Pool Party and Concert” that will be held at the San Pedro Fitness Club on Saturday November 29th. The event, which is scheduled from 11:30AM to 6 PM, is a day of family fun and live music by renowned US performer (and island favorite) Kelly McGuire and guest musician John Arthur Martinez who is known for his country western/Latino music. Food, games, raffles, mini-golf and swimming are all part of the fun-filled day. Admission to the event will be $5 for adults and $3 for children and each paying guest will be entered into a grand prize raffle. A variety of lunch items including rice and beans, chicken and shrimp skewers and special desserts will be sold, with all lunch plates costing no more than $10. The event is hosted by SACNW and for more information e-mail enquiries can be sent to [email protected].
