In an effort to address the garbage concerns of the San Pedro Community, the San Pedro Town Council is pleased to announce the long awaited arrival of the island’s first Garbage Compactor. A promise made to the public by Area Representative for Belize Rural South Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. back in February of this year, became a reality on Friday when the compactor made its way to the island.
According to Councilor Severo Guerrero, the compactor will be used for the sanitary and safe cartage of household refuse from within the town core area. The garbage collected will then be transported to the South end dump site. Purchased from the Mexican side, the compactor weighs in at a price tag of $95,000bze. The standard automotive is designed to collect, press and compact, transport and discharge Waste Garbage as one-stop system; it provides the ultimate work efficiency with full automation in loading and compacting and discharging the garbage and minimum manpower is required.
Whilst the compactor will take away from the manpower street sweepers that the Council has employed, Guerrero explains that those men will still keep their jobs and that their work will be moved to maintaining the beaches clean. A designated driver, Orlando Flores, has been assigned to operate the vehicle and at least 10 cubic feet of trash can be carried away at one time.
It is anticipated that this project would encourage community participation in promoting a clean and healthy environment. Councilor Guerrero and the Town Council staff encourage residents of San Pedro that ALL garbage be bagged. They kindly ask that no steel, cement, or wood be put out to be placed in the compactor. This applies to both residents and businesses in particular to those in the town core area. It is hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties currently enjoyed by the governments and the people of Quintana Roo, Mexico and San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Next on the agenda is the arrival of the street sweeper which is soon to make its way to the island.
