Twenty four years ago, on Thursday, November, 27th, San Pedro was officially declared a Town. A massive school based parade was held and more than a handful of people were on hand to participate in the town’s milestone.
Although the public and school participation was fair, the festivities still went on; it was a short but very spirited parade enjoyed by many. This year, the San Pedro Town Council organized an all day Children’s Extravaganza at the Old Football Field where sporting activities, a marching band competition and a kite flying contest were the order of the day. At the end of the day, the winners were announced: 1st place in the Marching Band Competition went to Isla Bonita Elementary, whilst second to the Roman Catholic School. In the kite competition Eugene Bowen placed first, Joshua Chable placed second whilst Ethan Solorzano placed third. Throughout the day, all winners received medals for the various games played such as tug-of-war, two legged races, lime and spoon, sack race and more.
Despite its growth as a tourist and water sports enthusiast’s paradise, San Pedro Town still maintains a genuinely charming and thoroughly enchanting small town atmosphere. San Pedro was declared a town by the government of Belize in 1984 and November 27th is observed as Township Day.
