San Pedro Police gear up for Police Week

Share

Police Week will be celebrated in Belize from the 24th to the 30th of June under the theme “Let’s Unite and Continue to make Belize Safe.” As such, the San Pedro Police Department is gearing up for the week’s activities and has issued their official calendar of events.

On Sunday June 24th, the Police Department kicks off activities with their annual ecumenical church service at Living Word Church. The service starts at 10:45AM and will be open to the entire public. Immediately after the service, police officers will then be invited to a lunch by the local pastor of the church. A similar service is being planned simultaneously countrywide.

On Monday June 25th, members of the SP police department will be visiting hot spots and meeting with community members. They will be distributing flyers to encourage people to partner with the police in an effort to reduce crime. T-shirts will also be distributed to members of the community.

Activities continue on Tuesday June 26th with the first ever senior citizen lunch. The event will take place at the San Pedro Lion’s Den starting at 12 Midday where over 50 seniors will be treated and served lunch by members of the police department as a community service for Police Week.

The police will divide into two groups on Wednesday June 27th and visit the local schools where they will encourage students to consider police work as future career.

On Thursday June 28th, activities will move to the Saca Chispa for an all day fair. Starting at 9AM and running up to 4PM, the event is geared to create community awareness on the importance of the work of the police. Other government departments that work closely with the police in the enforcement of the law will also participate.

Two officers attached to the San Pedro police department will be honored on Friday June 29th at the Medal Ceremony in Belmopan City.  Assistant Superintendent of Police and Officer in Charge of the San Pedro Police Department Vienie Robinson, along with Sergeant Ludwig Castillo will be awarded the First Class Medal Award for serving as police officers for the past 25 plus years.

Events culminate on Saturday June 30th with a parade and closing ceremony. The parade starts at 10AM from the San Pedro Police Station and will move along the principal streets of San Pedro Town ending back at the San Pedro Police Station. A closing ceremony will follow immediately after where awards will be distributed for Officer of the Year, Special Constable of Year and Citizen of the Year.

It is the hope of the Police Department that with Police Week being held in San Pedro, it will give the community an opportunity to reflect on the various aspects of the duties of the police officers and the department. In doing so it can serve to encourage the community to join with the Police Department in reducing crime on this tourism-dependent island, as well as in Belize.
