SPHS baseball team prepares for CODICADER games in Panama

The San Pedro High School (SPHS) baseball team is making final preparations to travel to Panama where they will represent Belize at the Consejo del Istmo Centroamericano en Deportes y Recreación (English: Council for Sports and Recreation of Central America) CODICADER games. The games will run for four days and will include all Central American countries, with the exception of El Salvador.

Speaking to The San Pedro Sun, Team Coach Marion Mejia said that the team leaves on the 10th and returns of the 16th of October. “The competition is from the 12th to the 15th of October. The team will play five games in four days. Six countries are participating, all the Central American countries, with the exception of El Salvador who will not be taking a team. Each of the teams will play five games and the team with the best record will win the gold medal,” said Mejia. As for the ongoing preparation, Mejia commented that “The team started practicing on April 28th, and since baseball is being introduced to the country and SPHS is the only high school that plays the sport, the team traveled to Chetumal four times and played eight practice matches. The team has come a long way since making the switch from softball to baseball, but the boys have dedicated themselves and are ready to represent Belize.”

As a final fund raiser, a radiothon is being conducted today Tuesday, October 2, on Reef Radio to help the team come up with much need funds to travel to Panama. Be sure to call in and make your donation – there are also students out on the streets doing a dollar drive…give generously!

The SPHS baseball team was allowed to reinforce and strengthen the team, and as such four mainland students have been practicing with the team. But Mejia explained that the core of the team is from San Pedro Town. The players are: Nick Chang, Gerardo Carmona, Kevin Corado, Wayne Alex Cadle, Eduardo Diaz, Merari Diaz, Konrad Gonzalez, Mariano Guerrero, Jovi Ico, Kristopher Majarrez, Brandon Munguia, Luis Pinelo, Damian Pollard, Esdras Ramirez, Cole Ray, Alex Roache and Jonah Welcome. The San Pedro Sun joins the country in wishing the team the best of luck as they travel to represent the county.

And just as the baseball team is preparing to leave to Pamana, three students from San Pedro returned last week from the Track and Field CODICADER games in El Salvador. Gian Rivero, Brandon Santos and Eric Donis were a part of the Track and Field Belize Team. Even though the three students from SPHS did not bring back any medals, they certainly made the island proud.
