Share

The San Pedro High School (SPHS) softball team traveled to Orange Walk Town to compete in the Northern Regionals in the male and female division of the National High School Softball Competition. It has been about seven years since SPHS has had a female softball team representative. The competition took place on Saturday March 1st at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town. Coaching the male team was Marion Mejia, while the female team was coached by Iris Perez.
The first game saw reigning national champions SPHS boys against the Belize Rural High School. A strong pitching performance from Konrad Gonzalez and great defense from SPHS ensured the first win with a 10-0 score. The great performance of the boys in the first game was elevated when SPHS girls won their first game against Escuela Secundaria Mexico of the Corozal District.

SPHS boys went up against their rival Orange Walk Technical High School in the championship match, snagging an impressive 14-0 victory and the coveted championships. At the end of the tournament, San Pedro’s Konrad Gonzalez was awarded MVP of the tournament. According to proud coach, Marion Mejia, the SPHS boys have been practicing for the past six months in preparation for this tournament and performed more than great.
In the female division SPHS met up against Belize Rural High School. It was a tight match but Belize Rural managed to overcome the SPHS girls securing them first place, while SPHS girls had to settle for second place. Coach Iris Perez told The San Pedro Sun that considering it was the first time SPHS had sent a female team in seven years to such a tournament, their performance was more than satisfactory.
