Local Volleyball Tournament draws to a close

Friday, November 27th saw the final games of the 4 x 4 Volleyball Tournament at the Honorable Louis Sylvester Sporting Complex. Six teams competed for the coveted first place in their respective categories: Junior, Female and Male divisions. The last leg of the sporting event kicked off at 8PM sharp with Island Boyz facing Bombas in the Junior Category. Unique Girls vs 4 Play On The Sand in the Female Category and culminating the sporting evening were Blazers vs Divers in the Male Division.SPTC Volleyball Tournament Finals-20
Juniors Island Boyz easily defeated Bombas, walking away with the first place victory with a score of 3 best sets out of 5 (21-13, 21-13, 15-10). Unique Girls took on 4 Play On The Sand for the Females title. This was an intense match, as both teams gave their all to get the best out of five sets. It was a tight 3-0 game set, but at the end, 4 Play On The Sand claimed first place, winning the three required sets (21-15, 21-8, 21-14). After this game, there was an interlude as the volleyball net had to be adjusted for the last match of the evening, the one most fans were waiting for, the Male division. Despite a light rain, the last match of the evening began on schedule, with the Blazers taking on the menacing Divers team. Ricky Luna was one of the favorites in the Blazers’ team, doing real damage to the Divers. Setters showed their skills as they prepped the right sets for some dangerous spikes. Each set showed hard work from both sides and after a 3-0 game set, (21-12, 21-15, 21-18), Blazers took the first place victory.SPTC Volleyball Tournament Finals-18
An award ceremony followed immediately after the games. Councilor Hector “Tito” Alamilla congratulated all the teams who participated, and thanked everyone for their support. Miss San Pedro Iris Salguero gracefully presented each team with their prizes and medals. The first team to be awarded was Island Boyz in the Junior Division, followed by 4 Play On The Sand girls in the Female Category receiving their first place trophy to much applause. The crowd cheered loudly as their favorite team, Blazers was called up for their first place championship trophy.
After the trophy presentation the distribution of individual trophies began for best setters and MVP players. In the Female division, Laidy Gonzalez was recognized as best setter, followed by Emma Hoare with two recognitions for best spiker and MVP. Lastly in the Male Division, Guillermo Rivero was best setter while Ricky Luna received both awards for best spiker and MVP.
