Senate discusses proposed 2024-2025 fiscal budget

On Tuesday, March 26th, the Senate debated the General Revenue and Appropriation Bill, also known as the fiscal budget for 2024-2025. However, the debate was not robust because members of the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) were absent. The proposed fiscal year budget of BZ$1.5 billion was previously debated and passed after a three-day debate in the House of Representatives on Friday, March 22nd.

March is Women's Month celebrated worldwide, and in San Pedro Town, several activities honor this special occasion, highlighting women's efforts and contributions to the island community through various events, from sports to social gatherings.

Regulations on alcohol sales on Good Friday

In December 2022, an amendment was made to the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Regulation, which allows most establishments to sell alcohol on Good Friday during the Easter weekend starting from March 29th. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, the Town Council stated on Tuesday, March 26th, that only Public and General Liquor Licenses (wholesale) holders, including those with Malt licenses (retail), will not be allowed to operate on Good Friday.

Demand for power on Ambergris Caye surpasses capacity

As Ambergris Caye continues to develop, the demand for resources such as electricity is significantly increasing. On Saturday, March 23rd, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) stated that the demand for electricity on the island surpassed the rated capacity of the submarine cable (17 Megawatts) that supplies power from the national grid. This forced BEL to shut down service to parts of northern Ambergris Caye to protect the submarine cable and circuit from damage.

San Pedro Traffic Wardens Undergo Training

On Thursday, March 21st, the San Pedro Traffic Department participated in a training program to improve their knowledge of traffic laws, safety, and law enforcement. The training was organized in line with the Department of Transport's mission to develop, promote, and regulate a modern and efficient transportation sector through effective traffic management, human resource development, and community participation, focusing on public safety.

All welcomed to the 4th Annual Women in Business Expo

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) will host a special Women in Business Expo at the Honourable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex, also known as “Saca Chispas,” on Saturday, March 30th, starting at 6:30 pm. There will be a variety of food and drink, presentations, music by the Island Flames Band, dancing, and other fun activities. Entrance to the event is free for all residents.

The San Pedro Tiger Sharks climbed to second place in the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) standings after defeating the Belize City Defenders 104-70. The match was held on Saturday, March 23rd, at the Civic Center in Belize City.

Calling all football fans: The Island Football League starts 2024 season

The Island Football League (IFL) has returned with 12 teams competing for the championship. The first week of matches concluded with six top football clubs leading in the league's standings. These teams include Shark Shooters FC, Terror Squad FC, Conquerors FC, Sea Bulls FC, G Strikers FC, and Joker Futbol Club. The other teams in the competition, namely Black Sails FC, SPHS FC, Alaia FC, Sharks FC, Vince Assassins FC, and Ambergris Hope FC, have yet to secure a win.
