Ministry of Health and Wellness Announces New Measures for COVID-19

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is eager and committed to work with all sectors to reduce the increasing COVID-19 cases and deaths. The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation in the immediate short term and adjust plans as necessary on the advice of its medical team.  

Belize has a Blue Economy Ministry; where did it emerge from, and what is it about?

The Blue Economy is a strategy created by the Commonwealth, an association of 54 countries, of which Belize is a member. These nations have agreed to actively cooperate to solve ocean/sea-related problems and meet commitments for sustainable marine areas’ development.

Amendment to new SI welcomed by tourism stakeholders

Stakeholders welcomed the amendments to the new Statutory Instrument (SI) regarding the COVID-19 Regulations 2020 No. 170, allowing open-air restaurants to accommodate a 50% seating capacity instead of only 12 patrons as previously announced. The 21-day curfew scheduled for Saturday, November 28th, will start at 10PM and not at 9PM as previously announced and ending at 4:59AM.

San Pedro Town Council offers 10% discount on Property Taxes

The SPTC says that the 10% discount on property taxes applies to the tax year 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

Ministry of Health and Wellness announces national curfew and plan to combat COVID-19

On Saturday, November 28th, a 21-day national curfew will be implemented from 9 pm to 5 am, in an effort to curb the surge in covid cases. The Health and Wellness sector will also see an increase in testing sites and more rapid testing, and Belizeans should see numbers escalate due to increased testing.

SPPD burns over 100kg of illegal drugs

Over 100 kilos of confiscated drugs, consisting primarily of marijuana, cocaine, and pills such as Ecstasy, were burned on Wed. Nov. 25th.

Reminder – Protection of Sea Turtles

The Department hereby reminds the PUBLIC that in accordance with Regulation 10 of Statutory Instrument No. 66 of 2002, under the Fisheries Resources Act No. 7 of 2020: • No person shall fish for in the waters of Belize or buy, sell, or have in possession any turtle of the following species: a) Eretmochelys imbricata (Hawksbill Turtle) b) Caretta caretta (Loggerhead Turtle) c) Chelonia mydas (Green Turtle) d) Dermochelys coriacea (Leatherback Turtles)

IDB, World Bank and CABEI expand support for Central America in wake of second hurricane

Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) president Mauricio Claver-Carone convened a virtual meeting last Friday, November 20th with leaders and ministers of Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua, along with World Bank Group president David Malpass and Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) president Dante Mossi, to update the action plan for helping these countries to deal with the impacts of hurricanes Eta and Iota.
