Froyla Tzalam sworn in as Belize’s new Governor General

Thursday, May 27th, will go into the history books as the day that Belize installed its third and first Indigenous American Governor General in the Commonwealth, Froyla Tzalam. The historic moment took place at the House of Culture, where Tzalam was sworn in as the new representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II-Belize’s Head of State.

Arson investigation into fire at Pedro’s Hotel and Inn underway; one suspect in custody

The cause of the early morning fire at Pedro’s Hotel and Inn on Seagrape Drive in San Pedro Town on Sunday, May 23rd, is not yet clear, but authorities are considering arson. This has reportedly led to the detention of an individual as investigators complete their probe to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

Members of the Chinese community on the island get their jab of the Sinopharm vaccine

On Tuesday, May 25th, dozens of members from the Chinese community in San Pedro Town made their way to the island’s Lions Den to get their first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine against COVID-19. This is the second vaccine available in Belize besides the Oxford-AstraZeneca, and it has attracted the Chinese community because it is made in their country of origin.

No fuel shortages on the island

While in some parts of the mainland a shortage of fuel has been reported, San Pedro Town still counts with a good supply. Caribeña Enterprises, which distributes fuel on the island, advises residents not to be concerned as they have enough in stock, and more is being barged from the mainland.

Sheep Management Training for Toledo Farmers

The Sheep Project Phase II under Taiwan Technical Mission, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, conducted a general sheep management training at the Toledo Agriculture Station on May 20, 2021.

Blood drive held in honor of baby Everlett Sturmberg collects 29 pints

In honor of baby Everlett Sturmberg, the Belize Red Cross-San Pedro branch had a blood drive on Saturday, May 22nd, and collected 29 pints of the vital liquid. The drive took place at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II. A dollar drive was also conducted by volunteers collecting a total of $213.91.
