UDP Party Leader visits San Pedro and calls for BTL’s Chairman resignation

The Honourable Patrick Faber, Leader of the United Democratic Party, visited San Pedro Town on Thursday, August 26th, to meet with his party supporters. Faber also weighed on national issues like the national telephone company Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) losing a multi-million contract to Speednet/Smart. Faber said BTL's Chairman Mark Lizarraga did not do enough to prevent this and is calling on him to resign from his post.

European Union (EU) and PAHO/WHO donate a 16-module GeneXpert machine to Belize’s Central Medical Laboratory and MoHW bids farewell to the EU’s Team Leader...

Through the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the European Union Directorate-General for International Partnerships (formerly EU-DEVCO) donated a 16-module GeneXpert machine to the Central Medical Laboratory (CML)/Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) as part of the EU-WHO regional project on Health Systems Strengthening of Universal Health Care (UHC).

CZMAI meets with CCAD delegation during the 2021 Mission to Belize

On August 25, 2021, the Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute (CZMAI), a statutory body under the Ministry of Blue and Civil Aviation, hosted a meeting with the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD) Delegation led by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Jair Urriola Quiroz as a part of the 2021 official mission to Belize from August 22-26, 2021.

U.S. Embassy Donates PPEs and Off-Road Vehicles to the Belize Police Department

On August 25, 2021, the U.S. Embassy donated personal protective equipment (PPEs), which will help to ensure Belizean police personnel remain protected in their high-risk roles as frontline workers. In addition, the United States also donated three off-road capable vehicles to the Belize Police Department.

Belize receives over 130k doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine

The doses were made available through a partnership with UNICEF and the African Union’s African Vaccine Acquisition Trust. Present for the arrival was Dr. Melissa Diaz Musa, Deputy Regional Manager, Central Health Region, on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), and Ms. Paulett Wade, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, UNICEF Belize.

Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye donates school bags and supplies

With the help of a group of generous sponsors and private donations, the Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye managed to raise over BZ$9,000 to purchase more than 200 schoolbags and supplies. This achievement fulfilled their target for their ‘Back to School 2021’ campaign. The schoolbags and supplies were shared among four educational institutions on the island.

Alejandro Choc remanded to Central Prison after arraigned for two counts of Rape of a Child

On Thursday, August 26th, Alejandro Choc, age 20, was arraigned at the San Pedro Magistrate Court for two counts of Rape of a Child. In a report made to the police on August 23rd, Choc is accused raping a 12-year-old girl. He was denied bail and will return to court on November 24, 2021.

Employers expected to verify frontline workers are vaccinated

At the end of June, the government announced that by August 1st, most front-line workers should have been vaccinated with at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. In the event they are not, these individuals are required to start presenting a negative COVID-19 test every two weeks at their own expense.
