Prime Minister Briceño Meets with the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry
On November 24, 2021, Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño and Hon. Christopher Coye, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, met with the executive council of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) at his office in Belize City. The main area of focus was the imminent opening of the land borders.

Land borders to open in early 2022; no word on sea borders
Belize’s land borders with Guatemala and Mexico are set to fully re-open in early 2022. There was no mention of sea borders. The decision was issued in a release by the Government of Belize stating that, after much discussion and considering several important factors, the Cabinet took the decision to continue kickstarting the national economy. Currently, the borders are partially open, only allowing authorized traffic and tourists staying at approved hotels to enter the country.

Abner Bacab and team complete introductory Search and Rescue training
Islander and San Pedro’s only certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Abner Bacab, is on a mission to continue providing the island with emergency services. After opening his company, Island Emergency Services (IES), which is equipped with an ambulance, Bacab recently took his team to the mainland, where they attended a four-day introduction training on search and rescue. The exercise involved dealing with water emergencies, basic first aid, hauling system, responding in a jungle environment, assessing patients and casualty evacuation, and patient packaging.

Government to protect consumers against price gouging
The availability of goods and supplies is becoming an issue due to problems with shipping, leading to the cost increase of commodities and services. More increases in basic food items are expected. As such, the Government of Belize will be introducing new legislation at the next sitting of the House of Representatives to protect Belizean consumers against price gouging.

Following the inaugural flight of Alaska Airlines to Belize on Friday, November 19th, the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations is looking towards Mexico and the United Kingdom (UK) to attract additional air carriers to the country.

Aces Wildlife Rescue and ECI Development work together on mangrove restoration
As the island develops mangroves are cleared in some regions with little consideration for environmental impact. Aces Wildlife Rescue and ECI Development have joined forces in a mangrove rehabilitation program that has led to planting mangrove propagules (seeds) along specific areas of the beach.

Longtime island icon Dennis Wolfe passes away
The San Pedro Sun is heartbroken to report that long-time resident, island icon musician, and our beloved "Wolfe's Woofers" contributor Dennis Wolfe has passed away. According to his family, he peacefully passed away in his sleep this morning, November 24th. Dennis, 75, died in Chetumal, Mexico, where he lived the last few years with his wife, Sherry.
