MOHW urges people to get second COVID-19 booster: no more Pfizer doses after May

It will be almost a month since the government lifted COVID-19 restrictions within Belize. Despite the move, the vaccination campaign to immunize as many people as possible continues. With the virus still a public health concern worldwide, on Thursday, April 28th, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) sent out a message encouraging people to obtain their second COVID-19 booster against the disease that remains a threat to the most vulnerable. The ministry also announced that doses of the Pfizer vaccines will no longer be available at the vaccination sites after May.

High-Level Delegation Meets with Multilateral Development Banks, U.S. Government Agencies and Canadian Government Officials

Hon. Christopher Coye, Minister of State, Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, led a high-level delegation of Belizean officials to Washington, D.C., from April 19 to 22, 2022, for a series of meetings with senior representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC). The delegation also met with senior representatives from the U.S. Treasury and the Office of Comptroller of Currency and held a bilateral meeting with Hon. Harjit S. Sajjan, Canada’s Minister of International Development.

Government says no to increasing bread prices; cost is on the rise

An official note from the recent Cabinet meeting was released on Thursday, April 28th, denying the request to increase the price of 16-ounce sliced bread. The government also rejected a request to approve an increase of 50% on the wholesale price.

U.S. Donates Medical Supplies to Support Belize’s National Referral Hospital

 In a ceremony held on April 28th, U.S. officials donated medical supplies funded through the U.S. Department of Defense Southern Command’s Humanitarian Assistance Program to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).  Bilateral Affairs Officer in the U.S. Embassy’s Security Cooperation Office Major Anissa Johnson presided over the donation ceremony, which Chief Executive Officer for the KHMH Chandra Nisbet Cansino attended.

El Pescador recognized as 2022 Orvis International Destination of the Year

Fly-fishing is a popular sport attracting thousands of anglers to Belize’s iconic Ambergris Caye every year. Among the different fly-fishing options on the island, one synonymous with Ambergris Caye is the El Pescador Lodge and Villas, located north of San Pedro Town. The lodge has developed an exemplary international reputation which continues to be recognized. Their hard work has again paid off, meriting the 2022 Orvis International Destination of the Year award recently presented at the annual Orvis Guide Rendezvous in Missoula, Montana, USA.

Tour Operators: Deadline to apply for the fuel subsidy program is this Friday

On April 5th, the Government of Belize (GOB) approved a capped fuel subsidy to eligible tour and tender operators. The support, backed by Cabinet, will be funded by $1.5 million financed by the central government and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB).

San Pedro Pirates grab third place at FFB’s Top League closing season

The island’s major football team, San Pedro Pirates, ended in third place in the closing season of the Football Federation of Belize’s (FFB) Top League, following their 6-0 victory over Garden City. In second place and sub-champions of the competition was team Altitude from Stann Creek District, while team Verdes from the Cayo District emerged as champions, finishing the championship undefeated.
