Investigation ongoing in the murder of Mirza Morales; believed to have ties to the 2019 San Pedro Double Murder

Former San Pedro resident, 31-year-old Mirza Morales, was murdered at her business establishment, La Casona Restaurant and Bar, at El Progresso (Seven Miles) in the Cayo District over the weekend. According to police reports, the incident seems to have been a targeted attack, as no signs of a robbery were observed. Before relocating from San Pedro Town, Morales was the partner of tour guide Mario Graniel who, along with American tourist Dr. Gary Swank, was shot dead during a fly-fishing trip.

San Pedro Dance Academy pays tribute to island moms

The San Pedro Dance Academy (SPDA) celebrated moms, grandmothers, and all other maternal figures on Saturday, May 27th, during a special Mother’s Day Tribute Program. The academy’s talented young dancers graced the San Pedro Lions Den stage, entertaining their beloved family and friends.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve concludes its 2023 Reef Fest with a fun and educational fair

After a full week of fun and educational activities, the 2023 Hol Chan Marine Reserve Reef Fest concluded with a grand fair at the Boca del Rio Beach Park on Saturday, May 27th. The family event featured informational booths by several local and off-island organizations, as well as live music, a kayak race, games, and lots of giveaways.

PLB’s San Pedro Pirates fall short to Verdes; settle for Sub-Championship

On Sunday, May 28th, facing bitter rivals Verdes FC for the last of two game finales, and down 1 point, The San Pedro Pirates fell short 2-1 and settled for the title of sub-champions. In an exciting final championship match, Verdes proved to be the top team in the country, securing their spot as champions with a 2-1 game point and a 3-1 aggregate score.

Belize Delegation Meets with Prime Minister of South Korea

On May 26, 2023, Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration; H.E. Jaime Briceño, Belize’s Ambassador of Investment and to the Holy See; and Dr. Osmond Martinez, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Economic Development, attended a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo of South Korea at the Seoul’s Government Complex.

Prime Minister Meets with Green Climate Fund and Global Green Growth Institute

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea invited the Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, to be the keynote speaker at the World Climate Industry Expo - Leaders’ Summit in Busan, Republic of Korea. The summit will take place on May 27, under the theme “Global Cooperation and Solidarity for the Fight against Climate Change in the Ocean.”

BEL presents its five-year plan

On Thursday, May 25th, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) presented its five-year business plan at a Stakeholder’s Engagement event held at its main office in Belize City. The special event served as an opportunity to showcase the technological upgrades BEL is planning, aiming to be more efficient, possibly eradicate unplanned power outages and reduce the use of fossil fuels.

The murder trial for David Gonzales continues at the Supreme Court

The murder trial of 32-year-old David Gonzales continued this week at the Supreme Court in Belize City. Accused of murdering his wife, Marisela Gonzales, back in October 2020, Gonzales’ trial began on July 21, 2022, with the announcement of over 40 witness statements as evidence.
