Festivities for Dia de San Pedro begin

From as early as 4AM, San Pedranos started the annual and traditional Dia de San Pedro celebrations on Thursday, June 29th. The first day of the festivities honoring the island’s Patron Saints, San Pedro and San Pablo, included a full day of activities spearheaded by the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church. The festival will span over the weekend with the Miss San Pedro Pageant and local and international entertainment at the Honourable Louis Sylvestre sporting complex.

Marine litter scientists from the UK and Belize working together to tackle plastic pollution in the ocean

Scientists and leaders from across Belize are meeting at the Water Quality and Marine Pollution Workshop on 27th June 2023 at Radisson Fort George Hotel in Belize City, to share their ideas and develop next steps to tackle ocean pollution and support a healthy marine environment. At the event, hosted by the Department of the Environment (DOE), experts will be sharing current monitoring practices, scientific knowledge, and identifying opportunities to collaborate and coordinate Belize’s national response to river and marine pollutants. Among the attendees are key stakeholders from the Government of Belize, managers of Marine Protected Areas, and scientists from water quality monitoring laboratories.

Department of Local Government Holds Municipal (Magistrate) Court Initiative with Town & City Councils

On June 27, 2023, mayors and key administrative staff from town and city councils across Belize, including the chairperson of the Caye Caulker Village Council, participated in a one-day consultation session with the Department of Local Government, on a proposed initiative to expand the establishment of Municipal (Magistrate) Courts.

San Pedro Tiger Sharks ties BEBL final series 1-1

The island’s premier basketball team won the second game of the best-out-of-five final series of the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL). The San Pedro Tiger Sharks traveled to Belize City on Sunday, June 25th, to face the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes after they could not play their home game in San Pedro. Against the odds, the island team delivered and sealed their first victory in the BEBL finals 66-61 over the city team.

Belize Hosts LVIII Ordinary Meeting of COMISCA

Belize hosted the LVIII Ordinary Meeting of El Consejo de Ministros de Salud de Centroamérica (COMISCA) in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, as the country wraps up its Pro Tempore Presidency of COMISCA.

A weekend full of graduations on the island!

June is known in San Pedro Town for being a month full of community activities, from the traditional island celebrations to those marking the end of a school year. The graduation season is always a time to celebrate the achievements of students from all levels, and over the weekend, several schools hosted this anticipated event for their senior students. Some of these graduations over the weekend saw pre-schoolers and primary schoolers marching the aisles to the tune Pomp and Circumstance.

Closure of the Florida Stone Crab Fishing Season

The Fisheries Department - Belize takes this opportunity to inform all fishers and the public that in accordance with the Fisheries Resources Act and Statutory Instrument No.108 of 2022 the Florida Stone Crab (Menippe mercenaria) fishing season is declared closed from July 1st to September 30th, 2023.
