Women’s Month celebrated in March; Women and Girls Empowerment workshop organized in San Pedro

Belize started celebrating Women’s Day in the 1970s and now observes March as Women’s Month. The aim is to celebrate women’s achievements, empower them, and combat gender bias while promoting awareness and equality. This year Women’s Month is being celebrated under the team “Inspire Inclusion, Count Her In” and will take a holistic approach towards women and girls, focusing on their social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.

Islander dies in boating accident while working at sea

Eight San Pedro residents were involved in a boating accident on Wednesday afternoon, February 28th, prompting the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) to conduct a search and rescue operation between the Turneffe Atoll and English Caye. The operation managed to locate everyone; however, one of the islanders did not survive the ordeal. The deceased was identified as Sylvio Camara, a former teacher from San Pedro.

San Pedro Junior College places 4th at ATLIB softball nationals

The San Pedro Junior College (SPJC) softball team represented the Central region and placed fourth at the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize (ATLIB) national softball championships hosted by Independence Junior College (IJC) at the 3D Softball Stadium in Independence on Saturday, February 24th.

San Pedro Belize Express launches upgraded service to Chetumal, Quintana

San Pedro Belize Express launched the maiden voyage of their Three Star Voyager vessel for runs from San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, to Chetumal Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Saturday, February 24th. The ferry service will include runs between Belize City, Caye Caulker, and San Pedro and will now have extended service to Chetumal. The passenger boat leaves from the Caye Caulker port at 7AM, stops at San Pedro's International Terminal at 8:30AM for immigration purposes, and then leaves for Chetumal. The vessel returns at 3:30PM Mexican time.

Island Academy girls win third place at NSC national basketball championships

The Island Academy basketball girls won the Belize district primary schools basketball championship at the Belize Civic Center on Thursday, February 15th, which qualified them to the national championships organized by the National Sport Council, where they won third place against four other district champions at the Punta Gorda Multi-purpose Sports Complex on Friday, February 23rd.

Area Representative Hon. Perez and SPTC present school bus service for students in northern Ambergris Caye

During a public meeting conducted by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) and attended by Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez, a small school bus was presented to serve the students residing in northern Ambergris Caye. The community's parents, situated ten miles north of San Pedro, expressed their gratitude to the local authorities for providing the school bus. The bus is scheduled to begin its transportation service on Monday, February 26th, and onwards.

Anke Doehm starts Cruelty to a Child trial in Belize City

The trial for the criminal case against Anke Doehm for the death of her adopted daughter Faye Lin Cannon started on Wednesday, February 21st, at the High Court in Belize City. Doehm faces a charge of Cruelty to a Child after Cannon was found dead in her bedroom on July 3, 2017, in their apartment north of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.

San Pedro Junior College to implement state-of-the-art online school management system

A new and improved online management system is under development for the San Pedro Junior College (SPJC). The Kreative Online School Management System (KOMS) program aims to enhance educational delivery, improve data security, and ensure secure digital transactions and financial reports. The new technology will enable the school to simplify information, reduce the use of additional resources, and become more efficient in their academic and administrative management.
