Residents say stronger enforcement needed to curb illegal dumping
The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is again warning the public against illegal dumping, particularly on vacant lots across the island. The council reminded residents that disposing of garbage on both private and public properties is illegal and that all waste should be taken to the Solid Waste Transfer Station south of San Pedro. While many islanders agree with the council's message, they say stronger enforcement is needed to address the problem.

Additional flights from Canada to Belize expected to boost tourist arrivals
While many in the tourism sector have reported challenges in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, they remain hopeful that the upcoming high season will bring improved business following the announcement of a new direct flight from Winnipeg, Canada, to Belize. Canadian carrier WestJet announced on July 20th that it will expand its network with new non-stop service to five destinations, including Belize, beginning December 14, 2026.

No arrests made yet in connection with San Pedro’s double murder
It has been over a month since the murders of Lebanese island resident Yahya Muhammad Harmoush, locally known as David Harmouch, and security guard Daniel Jones, and police have yet to make an arrest in the case. Both Harmouch and Jones were gunned down on June 28th at their workplace, Island Supermarket, north of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. Police indicated that the investigation is ongoing as they continue to follow leads in an effort to apprehend those responsible for the crime that shocked the island community.

North Guardians summer camp gives San Pedro children a memorable experience
The Ambergris North Alliance (ANA) concluded its inaugural North Guardians summer camp on July 27th after hosting a two-day program for children in North San Pedro. The camp ran from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days at the Belize Eco Museum and welcomed approximately 25 to 30 children for educational activities, meals, and interactive learning sessions.

One Shot One Kill to represent San Pedro at National 8-Ball Championship
The San Pedro finals of the Belikin Stout National 8-Ball Tournament concluded on July 26th at Casey’s Boatyard Bar and Grill, where One Shot One Kill defeated the San Pedro Sharks 5-0 to claim the local championship. The victory secured One Shot One Kill’s place in the national championship, scheduled for Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd, at the Andres Campus Civic Center in Corozal, with play beginning each day at 9AM.

BTB’s annual licensing clinic streamlines tour guide renewals
The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) hosted its fourth annual Tour Guide Licensing Clinic at SunBreeze Hotel from Tuesday, July 28th to Friday, July 31st, offering new and renewing tour guides the opportunity to complete their licensing requirements in one location. By the end of the first day, the clinic had already assisted 174 guides, putting it on pace to surpass the 194 applicants served during last year's event.

First asylum seeker under U.S. agreement arrives in Belize
Belize has received its first asylum seeker under a bilateral agreement with the United States (U.S.). The Haitian national arrived in the country several weeks ago, marking the beginning of the safe third-country arrangement signed between the two countries in October 2025.

The Caye Caulker Lions Club officially installed its board of directors on Sunday, July 26th, during a ceremony in Caye Caulker that marked the beginning of the club's 2026-2027 term. Lions members, community representatives, and guests gathered to witness the installation and celebrate the club's continued commitment to community service.
