The future of the Cuban medical brigade in Belize remains uncertain amid pressure from the United States government, which has raised concerns that Cuba's overseas medical missions involve forced labor. Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard has denied reports that Cuban medical professionals are already being sent home but confirmed that Belize has until the end of September to determine the brigade's future in the country.

New Four-Year Project to Strengthen Belize’s Disaster Response
On Friday, August 28th, the Governments of Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) officially launched a four-year disaster risk management initiative, marking a significant expansion of cooperation in climate resilience. The Belize Multi-Hazard Risk Management Capacity Building Project was launched through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, Honorable Orlando Habet, and the Minister of the Public Service, Disaster Risk Management and Enterprise, Honorable Henry Charles Usher. Taiwan’s Ambassador to Belize, Amino Chi, witnessed the signing.

Community Run Opens Suicide Awareness Month
Fourteen people participated in a suicide awareness run organized by Coach Kian Trejo of the San Pedro Town Council Sports Department on Tuesday, September 1st. The event began at the southern end of the San Pedrito Highway and ended at Central Park, marking the start of Suicide Awareness Month.

Traffic Controls Increased for Back-to-School Rush
With schools officially reopening on Monday, August 31st, the San Pedro Traffic Department activated its road safety measures to protect students and other road users. These include regular traffic checkpoints and wardens at key intersections throughout town, particularly during busy drop-off and pick-up periods.

On Tuesday, September 1st, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) issued a public update reassuring customers that it continues to manage available generation following recent power outages. The company also confirmed that it wrote to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), requesting a formal emergency declaration to begin procuring additional emergency generation.

124 Belizean Women Graduate from CatalyzeHER Incubator Program
The CatalyzeHER Potential Initiative marked a milestone on August 29th, as NIME Belize and its partner, IDB Lab, hosted a national closing ceremony in Belize City to celebrate the completion of Stage 1 of the Incubator Program. The event brought together graduates from across the country, guest speakers, funding partners, and dignitaries to recognize the achievements of 124 women entrepreneurs from all six districts of Belize.
