On Saturday, November 9th, a group of athletes gathered to participate in a fitness tournament organized by Miss San Pedro 2024-2025, Alexa Acosta. The event occurred at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium at San Pedro High School, where male and female participants from various CrossFit gyms competed at the beginner and intermediate levels. They showcased their efforts and dedication to the fitness regimen, and the top three athletes in each category received prizes.
The fitness tournament commenced shortly after 9AM with a brief welcome, an introduction of the judges, and an overview of the various challenges. For beginners, the first task involved a competition consisting of a 200-meter run, ten squat cleans with weights of 75lbs for men and 55lbs for women, and 20 kettlebell swings using kettlebells weighing 35lbs for men and 25lbs for women. The intermediate-level participants faced a more challenging set of tasks, which included a 400-meter run, ten squat cleans with weights of 115lbs for men and 85lbs for women, and 20 kettlebell swings with kettlebells weighing 53lbs for men and 35lbs for women.

One of the challenges included a 10-minute AMRAP (as many reps as possible) workout. Athletes in both categories were required to complete eight cleans and jerks, followed by ten bar-facing burpees. For beginners, the weights were set at 75lbs for men and 55lbs for women, while intermediate competitors used weights of 95lbs for men and 65lbs for women. During this section of the tournament, athletes were allowed a two-minute rest period. Other tasks included one power clean, one hang clean, and one hang squat clean.
The third challenge was a ten-minute competition involving thrusters and weight step-ups. For beginners, the weights for single dumbbells were 35lbs for men and 25lbs for women, while intermediates used double dumbbells.

An overwhelmed and visibly moved Miss San Pedro Acosta expressed her gratitude to every athlete who participated in the Fitness Island Tournament. She also thanked the volunteers and judges who helped with the event. “I am so happy with how everything turned out,” she said. “The athletes truly blew me away with their performances; they gave it their all. I was also amazed by the community’s support for the event. It was unbelievable.”
The event concluded with the distribution of prizes for the top athletes in the beginner and intermediate divisions. Both the oldest and youngest participants were also recognized for their achievements.
The organizers expressed their gratitude to all the sponsors who contributed to the tournament and helped turn Acosta’s passion for CrossFit into a competitive event. She encourages residents to maintain a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and regular exercise.
CrossFit was developed by Greg Glassman, who, along with Lauren Jenai, founded the discipline in 2000. This fitness movement has been described as the largest fitness chain in the world. As of 2022, approximately 12,000 affiliated gyms in over 150 countries are registered, with less than half in the United States.
