Share

On December 13, 2024, a workshop at the Sunbreeze Conference Room in San Pedro focused on Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) to end violence against women and children. Organized by The National Women’s Commission, this initiative is part of a broader campaign to address gender-based violence (GBV) by promoting behavioral changes among men and boys in the community. The workshop brought together various stakeholders, including local leaders, educators, and community members, to engage in discussions and activities designed to challenge existing norms and promote healthier relationships.
The workshop emphasized the importance of communication strategies that resonate with the local culture while addressing the critical issue of violence against women and children. Participants were encouraged to share their experiences and insights, fostering an open dialogue about the societal factors contributing to GBV. The event featured interactive sessions where attendees learned effective messaging techniques to influence attitudes and behaviors positively.
One of the workshop’s initial components was defining terms and clarifying the differences between sex and gender and their respective roles and evolution. The organizers aimed to dismantle harmful stereotypes and promote a culture of respect and equality. This approach aligns with global efforts to engage all members of society in the fight against gender-based violence.
The workshop also highlighted successful case studies from other regions where similar campaigns have significantly reduced violence. These examples inspired participants to brainstorm ways to implement comparable strategies within their communities. The collaborative environment fostered a sense of ownership among attendees, motivating them to take action beyond the workshop.
In addition to practical training, the workshop provided resources for participants to continue their advocacy work. Attendees received materials outlining key messages and strategies for raising awareness about GBV. The goal is to educate and equip community members with the tools to effect lasting change.
Overall, the SBCC workshop in San Pedro marks a crucial step toward addressing violence against women and children in Belize. The initiative seeks to create a safer environment for all individuals by focusing on social norms and promoting change. The commitment shown by participants reflects a growing recognition of the need for collective action in tackling this pervasive issue within society.
