Secret Beach stakeholders addressed soliciting concerns

Share

During a meeting on November 28th, Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez and stakeholders from the Secret Beach Area discussed the issue of excessive solicitation, which negatively impacts local businesses. A stakeholder reported that some companies were encouraging employees to approach tourists outside their premises, making visitors uncomfortable. Members of the San Pedro Police Formation were present at the meeting. By the end of the discussions, all attendees agreed that employees must remain within their business premises.
Mayor Nuñez said on December 4th that the complaints included increased harassment of tourists, and as such, some of the business owners came together to address the issue. “We met and discussed the issue, which was not benefiting their businesses,” Nuñez said. “So, they all agreed and will not have anyone soliciting.” He added that some reports even suggested that some customers were being followed on motorcycles and escorted to certain establishments.
Other concerns exist in this popular island area, particularly regarding individuals soliciting. Mayor Nuñez stated they are collaborating with the island police to address those soliciting from structures built on public property. Visitors to this area have noted that soliciting is not only aimed at directing tourists to specific restaurants or bars; there have also been reports of drug dealers approaching customers.
Stakeholders were concerned that the situation would escalate, negatively impacting their tourism products. According to some of them, no soliciting from other businesses has been observed. However, they urge the authorities to continue enforcing this measure and take action against anyone engaged in this behavior. The business community believes that Secret Beach should be a safe and clean environment for recreation, allowing visitors the freedom to choose where to dine and spend their time.
Secret Beach, located northwest of San Pedro Town, is a popular destination for tourists and locals. Visitors come to this well-loved spot to relax while enjoying the water, sun, drinks, and food from the various restaurants and bars in the area. Over the years, the number of businesses has increased, and a growing residential community has developed. The road leading to this western beach has recently been upgraded to improve access. Many residents and business owners are now looking forward to the expansion of additional services, as the only sources of power currently available are generators and solar panel systems.
