Earth Hour observed in San Pedro

Share

Every year, communities worldwide promote a healthier planet by teaching younger generations the importance of responsible citizenship. One such effort is Earth Hour, an annual event that encourages people to pause their activities and turn off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour.
This year, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) hosted its Earth Hour event on Saturday, March 28th, at Flamboyant Park, south of town. The event aimed to raise awareness about climate change, biodiversity loss, and the need for environmental action.
SPTC Councilor Johnnia Duarte, who champions the initiative on the island, said the event was successful, with several children and their families in attendance. The family-oriented and educational activity included an environmental film, a bonfire, and an Earth Hour-themed competition. Attendees also enjoyed hot dogs, s’mores, music, and dancing.
Under this year’s theme, ‘Give an Hour for Earth,’ the SPTC emphasized the importance of giving back to the planet through positive actions. They noted that whether through food, fitness, the arts, or outdoor activities, anyone can dedicate an hour to caring for the environment at any time of year. The global initiative also marked two decades of climate action, evolving from the iconic ‘lights off’ call to the message of ‘spark for change.’
The activity in San Pedro was praised by islanders, who believe that educating young people about environmental responsibility is key to shaping future generations. The SPTC also thanked residents who observed Earth Hour at home by turning off their lights and dedicating time to the planet.
They further expressed appreciation to those who helped organize the event at Flamboyant Park and to everyone who attended. Across the globe, similar activities were held, encouraging individuals to switch off non-essential lights and disconnect from electronics in support of a cleaner, healthier world.
