Isla Bonita Elementary Brings Belize’s Cultures to Life on Cultural Day

Share

Isla Bonita Elementary School in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, hosted its annual Cultural Day on April 30th, bringing together students, staff, and community members to celebrate Belize’s rich and diverse heritage. The vibrant event showcased nine distinct cultures and offered a hands-on learning experience focused on history, food, music, and traditions.
The initiative sought to foster respect and appreciation for the ethnic diversity that shapes Belizean society. Throughout the day, students engaged in immersive activities representing nine cultures: Garifuna, Mennonite, Mestizo, Chinese, East Indian, Creole, Lebanese, Ketchi Maya, and Mopan Maya.
Preparation for the event involved weeks of research and collaboration among students and teachers. Classrooms dedicated time to studying their assigned cultures, creating informative displays, and rehearsing performances to ensure authentic and respectful presentations.
Principal Addy Martinez explained that the event also highlights students’ creativity, with judges evaluating booth decorations, artistic presentations, and cultural dances. Standard V teacher Dulce Barrera noted that the judging criteria included the accuracy of historical information, the organization and visual appeal of the booths, and the authenticity of the traditional attire.
To recognize participants’ effort and dedication, the school awarded certificates to the top-performing groups across several categories.

The annual Cultural Day remains a key part of the school’s academic calendar. By showcasing the contributions of Belize’s many cultures, Isla Bonita Elementary aims to instill a lasting sense of pride and inclusivity in its students, encouraging them to value and preserve these traditions for future generations.
