On August 17th, Mayor Gualberto Nuñez expanded on plans the San Pedro Town Council shared on August 6th for the site of the old artisan market across from the Saca Chispas field. The council proposes clearing the existing structures and redeveloping the property into a multipurpose complex featuring a formal market for fresh produce, dedicated artisan stalls, parking, and rentable event space.

Nuñez said representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Investment Center visited San Pedro and identified the island’s lack of a proper municipal market for fresh produce, meats, and artisan goods. The council and consultants are now in the design phase for a facility intended to address both market needs and the town’s ongoing parking challenges. The plan calls for portions of the development to be elevated, allowing parking underneath. This would provide additional parking during large events at the nearby Saca Chispas field and help alleviate daily parking issues.
The council has considered several concepts but has not finalized the architectural plans. Nuñez confirmed that the intention is to use the entire property and remove the existing artisan structures before construction begins. Proposed features include dedicated artisan and retail stalls, a visitor area with snack and beverage vendors, and an upper-level space that could accommodate conferences, weddings, and other paid events. According to the mayor, renting the event space could generate additional revenue for the municipality.
Nuñez also acknowledged concerns regarding space and accommodation for existing vendors. Current estimates indicate that more than 20 artisans operate near the field, while the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) market accommodates approximately ten stalls. The mayor said the council is working with its partners to develop a balanced solution and encouraged artisans to collaborate with the municipality, noting that upgraded, more secure spaces may incur rental fees. “We want a proper market for the island, a place to buy fresh produce and enjoy the area,” he said.
The project timeline will depend on the completion of designs and the securing of necessary approvals, in coordination with national agencies and partners, including the BTB. A construction start date has not yet been finalized, and the council is expected to provide further details once the plans are approved.
Mayor Nuñez said the proposed development is intended to improve San Pedro’s market infrastructure, address parking challenges, support local commerce, and enhance the area for residents and visitors. He added that these improvements should be accompanied by greater efforts to reduce litter and improve the upkeep of public spaces.
