Traffic Controls Increased for Back-to-School Rush

With schools officially reopening on Monday, August 31st, the San Pedro Traffic Department activated its road safety measures to protect students and other road users. These include regular traffic checkpoints and wardens at key intersections throughout town, particularly during busy drop-off and pick-up periods.
The increased presence responds to the congestion that typically accompanies the reopening of schools. To reduce traffic risks, the department has reinstated its usual detours around San Pedro Roman Catholic School. These diversions coincide with peak school hours, including morning arrival, the midday lunch break, and afternoon dismissal.
The measures aim to improve traffic flow as parents and guardians drop off and collect children, reducing the risk of accidents in heavily congested areas.
Traffic had flowed with fewer restrictions during the summer break, when school-related detours were not required. With classes resuming, the Traffic Department has returned to the protocols used before the break. These include coordinated checkpoints with the San Pedro Police Department to discourage dangerous driving and ensure compliance with traffic laws.
Earlier in August, the San Pedro Town Council also outlined plans to construct a market complex with adequate parking across from the Saca Chispas field. The proposed development is expected to help address parking and traffic safety concerns in the area.
Local authorities emphasized that uniformed personnel are intended to serve as both a deterrent and a source of assistance. “The safety of our children is paramount,” a department representative said. “By working closely with the police and having wardens physically present, we ensure that speed limits are respected and that the detours around the Roman Catholic School are strictly followed for the protection of all road users.”
The Traffic Department confirmed that its safety operations will remain in effect as the town prepares for the September Celebrations. Officers will continue working closely with the police to maintain order and ensure that the festivities do not compromise public safety on the roads.
