San Pedro Veterans hosted Chetumal Veterans of Mexico’s Club de Fútbol Ex DIF for a friendly match at the Ambergris Stadium on Friday, September 11th. The players, ranging in age from 40 to 50, showcased their football skills while promoting friendship and sportsmanship between the two neighboring countries. The island team delivered a strong performance, defeating the visitors 5-0.
The match kicked off at 6PM, with both teams bringing plenty of energy to the pitch. During the opening minutes, possession shifted between the two sides without any goals being scored. San Pedro later took control and opened the scoring midway through the first half. Chetumal increased the pressure as halftime approached but was unable to threaten the island team’s lead. San Pedro’s goalkeeper blocked every attempt, allowing the home team to enter the break in front.
Chetumal created several opportunities during the second half but could not find the back of the net. San Pedro continued pressing forward and added more goals to extend its lead. Although the visitors came close on several occasions, their attempts narrowly missed the target or were denied by the San Pedro defense.
With only minutes remaining, San Pedro’s forwards launched another attack, beat the goalkeeper and scored the final goal of the match. The friendly encounter ended with San Pedro Veterans earning an impressive 5-0 victory over Chetumal Veterans.
San Pedro veteran player Philip “Billy” Leslie said the score was not the most important part of the event. He noted that football brings people together, creates friendships, crosses borders, and builds lifelong bonds. “This was much more than a football match,” Leslie said. “It was a celebration of friendship, unity, sportsmanship and the love of the beautiful game.” He added that football has no borders and can unite nations.
The Chetumal Veterans expressed their appreciation for the hospitality shown by their longtime friends in San Pedro. The island team also thanked everyone who participated and helped make the event possible. Both teams agreed that the friendly match further strengthened the bond between the Belizean and Mexican footballers.
