San Pedro Police strengthen ties with Secret Beach businesses

The San Pedro Community Oriented Policing Unit (COPU) conducted a community policing Meet and Greet on Wednesday, September 16th, in the Secret Beach area of northern Ambergris Caye. Police personnel met with restaurant and bar operators as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement and the business community.
Police Constable Marcus Buruca, PC 1503, of the Tourism Policing Unit, spearheaded the engagement. Assistant Superintendent of Police Sheira Nicholas, Officer Commanding the San Pedro Police Sub-Formation, supported him, along with Inspector Castillo and personnel from the San Pedro Police Gang Intelligence, Community Oriented Policing, and Tourism Policing units.
Discussions focused on crime prevention, security awareness, and the importance of maintaining open communication between businesses and law enforcement. Business operators were encouraged to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activity, and continue working closely with the police.
The outreach formed part of the department’s community policing efforts, which focus on partnerships between officers, residents, and businesses to prevent crime and improve public safety. The initiative also followed recent concerns raised by Secret Beach stakeholders regarding the need for increased police patrols in the area.
During the visit, Happy Island Beach Bar & Grill provided lunch for the participating officers. The San Pedro Police Sub-Formation thanked the establishment for the gesture and commended its staff for their hospitality.
Police described the engagement as an opportunity to encourage greater collaboration and shared responsibility for safety. Community policing initiatives include meetings with residents and stakeholders, patrols, and crime-prevention activities that strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
The Meet and Greet is expected to support continued communication between police and Secret Beach businesses as the popular tourism area continues to develop. The initiative was held under the message, “Working Together, Building Safer Communities.”
