The Wheelchair Foundation will return to Belize in December to distribute free wheelchairs to people who need them. With assistance from the Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye, a distribution is planned for San Pedro Town on December 7th.
Island residents who need a wheelchair can call 615-4576 to request one. Applicants must complete a form, like the one included with this article, by October 30th.
Foundation volunteer Glenn Perry told The San Pedro Sun that the organization plans to bring 560 wheelchairs to Belize. They will distribute them to approved applicants in Belize City, other mainland communities, and Ambergris Caye. Applications will be reviewed with the assistance of Rotarians in Belize.
The San Pedro distribution is expected to take place at Central Park, with a noon ceremony attended by representatives of the San Pedro Town Council. “Through this event and God’s blessing, we provide the gift of mobility,” Perry said, thanking those who continue to support the foundation’s work.
According to Perry, this will be the foundation’s fifth year working in Belize, where it has delivered more than 4,700 wheelchairs. He said its records show that more than 1.2 million wheelchairs have been distributed across 156 countries.
Founded in 2000 by real estate developer and philanthropist Ken Behring, the Wheelchair Foundation provides manual wheelchairs to people who need mobility support but cannot afford one. It works with service organizations, including Rotary clubs, the Knights of Columbus, and Sister Cities International, to identify recipients and coordinate deliveries.
