San Pedro Town Council awards sports scholarships to four students

Share

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) Sports Program announced four school scholarship recipients on September 28th, recognizing young athletes for their participation in local sports while supporting their education. The recipients are Khobe Miller and Gibbson Callvio of Holy Cross Anglican Primary School, and Daniel Caliz and Kelvin Almendarez of San Pedro High School.
The scholarship package includes assistance with tuition and school supplies. According to the council, the program is intended to help students who actively participate in SPTC sports programs remain focused on their studies. It also aims to encourage the discipline, teamwork, and confidence sports build.
Miller is in Standard Four, and Callvio is in Standard Six at Holy Cross. Caliz is a freshman at San Pedro High School, while Almendarez is a senior. Almendarez has participated in the program for five years, beginning while he attended New Horizon. This is the first year in the scholarship program for Caliz, Miller, and Callvio.
Purchases at the Snack Shop and Snack & Bar Shack at Ambergris Stadium help support the initiative. The council said proceeds from food and drink sales go toward school-related needs for young athletes, including tuition, supplies, uniforms, and other expenses. Residents who buy from the stadium concessions therefore contribute to the assistance provided to participating students.
Holy Cross Anglican Primary School Principal Elsy Torres said she was proud of Miller and Callvio. She added that the school was awaiting confirmation from the council on the arrangements for this year’s awards. Previous scholarships have covered the school year, and the school expects this year’s assistance to be similar.

Deputy Mayor Adaly Ayuso, who oversees public events, culture and sports, was unavailable for comment on the latest awards. She has previously said the council considers students’ participation in sports, academic performance and personal circumstances when selecting scholarship recipients. The program seeks to assist students facing challenges, including those from single-parent households.
“After evaluation, we offer them a small contract, and the students must provide evidence of achieving and maintaining a minimum of 80% in their grades and must actively engage in community service at the Ambergris Stadium,” Ayuso said when explaining the program’s requirements.
The council hopes to add more students to the scholarship program. This year’s four recipients receive awards that offer practical help with school expenses while recognizing their continued involvement in sports.
