Dear Doctor Love,
I have been married for several years, and lately I keep thinking that I want a divorce. There has been no affair, no major argument, and no single incident I can point to. My husband is a good person, and we manage our everyday lives together, but something feels different for me. Even in the good moments, the feeling that I want to leave doesn’t go away.
I feel guilty because I cannot clearly explain what is wrong. I have tried to sort through my feelings, but I keep coming back to the same thought: I do not want to be married anymore. I have not told him because I know he will ask why, and I do not have an answer that would make sense to him.
How do I know whether this is something I need to work through or whether our marriage has come to an end for me? And how do I begin that conversation when all I can explain is a feeling? /s/ Thoughts of Divorce
Dear Thoughts of Divorce,
A marriage does not have to end with an affair or a terrible fight. Sometimes the distance grows quietly. Still, a feeling this serious deserves careful attention before you make a decision that will change both your lives.
Ask yourself what you imagine leaving would give you. Freedom? Peace? Time to yourself? Do you miss something between you, or have you become unhappy with your life more generally? Another useful question is whether you want to try finding your way back to him, or whether you feel you have already said goodbye inside. You may need help from a counselor to sort that out.
You can begin the conversation without having every answer: “Something has changed for me, and I have been thinking about leaving our marriage. I don’t fully understand it yet, but I need to be honest with you.”
He may be hurt and ask questions you cannot answer immediately. Give him room for that. If you are undecided, say so. If you have decided, do not offer hope of repairing things simply to soften the moment.
His being a good person matters, but guilt alone cannot keep a marriage alive. You owe him honesty and consideration. You owe yourself a careful decision you can stand behind. /s/ Dr Love
Dear Doctor Love,
Our community has changed a lot, and lately I feel overwhelmed by how quickly it is growing. More people are moving here from other countries, and I worry about whether there are enough jobs, affordable homes, and public services for everyone. Sometimes I miss the familiarity of knowing my neighbors and feel that we are losing some of what made this place feel like home.
At the same time, I know newcomers are people trying to build a life, just like the rest of us. I do not want to blame them for every problem or make anyone feel unwelcome. /s/ Community Changes
Dear Community Changes,
You can miss the community you grew up in and still welcome the people who now call it home. Those feelings can exist together.
The important thing is to be clear about what is troubling you. Rising rent, crowded schools, strained services and limited jobs deserve attention. But a person’s nationality does not tell you who caused those problems, and newcomers may be struggling with the same things.
Bring specific concerns to your town council and area representative. Ask what is being done about housing, services and the pace of development. Specific questions give leaders something to answer for.
Closer to home, get to know a new neighbor. Invite them to a community cleanup or local event. Share the customs you love and encourage people to take part.
Keeping a place feeling like home takes more than remembering how it used to be. It takes people looking out for it and for one another. You can help protect what you love without making someone else feel they do not belong. /s/ Dr Love
