Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is preparing for approaching Tropical Storm Nana, which is expected to become a hurricane by tonight.
The National Meteorological Service reports that at 3:00 p.m. today, Tropical Storm Nana was located about 155 miles East South East of Belize City with maximum sustained winds near 60 miles per hour, moving to the west at 15 miles per hour. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the coast of Belize from Belize City southward, and a Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch is in effect for the coastline north of Belize City.
As a part of BEL’s Hurricane Preparedness Plan, we are monitoring the weather and taking all necessary measures to maintain continuous, safe and reliable service to customers, where possible. The Company is mobilizing its people, resources and equipment to ensure that we are prepared to assess and recover from any impacts of the approaching storm.
In the event there is loss of power supply due to damage from Tropical Storm Nana, we will dispatch our teams to conduct assessments and repairs in order to restore power works as soon as the “All Clear” is given and it is safe to do so. If the conditions in the surrounding environment and/or the weather conditions are such that it would be unsafe for our teams, works will be delayed until conditions improve.
Additionally, to safeguard lives there may be a need to disconnect power supply in certain areas of the country, due to potential hazards caused by improper electrical connections.
As the storm approaches, we encourage everyone to take all health and safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by wearing facemasks, avoiding crowds, maintaining physical distance and
frequently washing hands.
