A large fire broke out on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 19th, in the DFC neighborhood of San Pedro, destroying three houses. The affected properties included a two-story home, a four-bedroom house, and a small shop with a bedroom, estimated at $200,000. The affected property owner, 47-year-old Sandra Isela Catzim, and the community are seriously concerned, as fire officials have confirmed that the fire was caused by arson.
The wooden structures were quickly engulfed in flames that began around 2:30 PM. Before firefighters could respond, the intense fire had destroyed the houses. A local firefighter, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “The houses were already lost by the time we arrived.” Residents were increasingly concerned about their safety and security due to the rapid spread of the fire. However, the blaze was contained once the San Pedro Fire Department arrived at the scene and later extinguished completely.
Before the fire, witnesses reported suspicious activity in the area. “My neighbor said they saw someone hanging around, and then suddenly, there was smoke everywhere,” one resident shared. “All I could do was grab my child and the most important documents and leave with my family.” This has raised concerns about potential criminal activity in the neighborhood. The police are currently investigating the incident and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is actively involved in monitoring the situation and preparing to assist those affected by this tragic event. Vanessa Parham, NEMO Coordinator for Belize Rural South, emphasized the importance of community vigilance and practicing fire safety, stating, “We encourage residents to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior.”
Local organizations are uniting to support those impacted by today’s fire. Authorities are calling for donations and assistance to help rebuild the lives of those affected by this unfortunate incident. As one resident said, “We must unite as a community to help our neighbors through this difficult time.” Catzim can be reached at phone 631-2706 for anyone willing to contribute to the cause.
