15 Belizeans awarded scholarships

Belizeans to study at CONALEP, Mexico, via scholarships from Mexican Government

Press Release – Embassy of Mexico to Belize, Belmopan – July 21, 2010 – The Embassy informs that 15 scholarships have been awarded this year by the Mexican Government to Belizeans who will pursue studies at the different campuses of the National School of Professional Technical Education (CONALEP) located throughout Mexico.

The scholarships are granted under an agreement between CONALEP and the Ministry of Education to promote the development of technical capacities of Belizean students. Such scholarships are for three to four years of study depending on the program and it covers registration, tuition fees as well as a monthly allowance.

This morning, the scholarship recipients along with their parents attended an introductory session conducted by representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Mexican Embassy which also included a presentation about Mexico. The students will travel to Mexico City in August where they will meet with officials from the Secretariat of Education and CONALEP.

Many Belizean students have benefitted from this program in the past nine years, receiving technical degrees in Nursing, Telecommunications, Electricity, Tourism, Catering, Food Industry and Optometry, among others. The students are expected to sign a letter of commitment to return to Belize upon completion of their studies with the aim that as professionals they contribute to the development of their country.
