Town Council Erecting Monuments in Town

Share

Many people in the community have noticed the cement tombstone-shaped monuments being erected in various parts of the town. According to the San Pedro Town Council, the monuments are being constructed to highlight Mayor Elsa Paz’s accomplishments during her three terms in office.

The monuments are being placed at the corner of most cobblestoned streets, at various parks around town and next to the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge. All monuments will have an inlayed marble tile with inscribed pictures and the names of all seven council members of the SPTC for the period 2003 to 2012. Beside the pictures on the tiles, each accomplishment will have the date that it was completed with the words “Built under the leadership of Mayor Elsa Paz and the UDP Town Council 2003-2012.”

According to a source at the town council, the SPTC is paying for the materials and labor (labor is at $975 so far) for the erection of 19 monuments. The approximate cost for each monument is estimated at $150 and each marble tile was bought for at a price of $60 each. If you do the math this puts the project cost at more than $5,000. Many residents are asking if the construction of the monuments is a priority for the SPTC, especially when the recent Mayor’s budget report states that the council is operating at a deficit of over $300,000.

The San Pedro Sun attempted to get a comment from the Town Council’s Administrator, Patricia Tillett but we were told that she was in a meeting. To date Tillett has not returned our call.
