San Pedro unites to bring Christmas joy to the Duran family
Wednesday, December 26th, 2012
It was show of community love and support on Saturday afternoon and evening, December 15th when a fundraiser was organized to assist the family of the late Hector “Chapin” Duran. Since November a group of residents of San Pedro have been planning the Christmas benefit to assist Duran’s five children who were left without a father after a tragic, fatal accident claimed his life on October 6, 2012. The support was massive, yielding over $5,000 in a single day’s event.
Held on the beach at Wayo’s Bar in Boca del Rio, attendees were invited to participate in the various raffles and auctions with chances to win great prizes, while giving to a greater cause. The silent auctions included 12 items ranging from scuba dives to fishing trips, overnight stays at resorts and even chances to win dining opportunities at various places on the island. Then there were “envelope draws.” For $5, one received the opportunity to randomly select tickets, some of which were winning tickets with over 70 different prizes including restaurant and bar tabs, bottles of rum, gift sets, full body massages, scuba dives and golf cart rentals. Jan Brown conducted her ever popular “Chinese Auction” for dozens of prizes where a secret time-limit was allotted for each of the prizes to be raffled.
The last fun filled activity offered chances to win fabulous prizes in a“50/50 draw.” Each $1 ticket gave participants the opportunity to win half of the entire accumulated pot, while the other half went to the Duran Family Christmas Fund.
Food and drinks were on sale in abundance and beside the fun raffles, there was entertainment which consisted of live music performances by a children’s choir, a Christmas Caroling choir, steel drums and percussion and even a marching band drum line. In a letter issued to the public from Vic Murphy, Melanie Paz and the Hector Duran Family Christmas Committee, the group wrote “On behalf of the five children of Hector ‘Chapin’ Duran, we would like to say ‘Thank You’ to all of those who so generously donated products or services to the Chapin’s Christmas Benefit.” With funds still coming in, the committee has managed to raise over $5,000 which will be equally divided between the five surviving children and supervised by a family member. The event was a magnificent show of support for which the committee and the sponsors deserve to be commended.
