Miss Honduras Maria Jose Alvarado goes missing

Honduran police are searching for 19-year-old Miss Honduras Maria Jose Alvarado who went missing on Thursday, November 13th along with her sister Sofia. The women were reported missing by a family member on Saturday, November 15th after they could not be contacted. Alvarado is no stranger to the island, as she represented her country in this year’s Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant held on Ambergris Caye.Maria-Jose-Alvarado-Honduras-Beauty-Queen-1
According to initial reports, Alvarado and her sister were last seen leaving a birthday party in Santa Barbara, Honduras. Police have since arrested four persons in connection to the disappearance. “The missing women were last seen getting into a vehicle as they left the party. Four people are under arrest. They include the owner of the party venue and Sofia’s boyfriend. They are being investigated,” said Chief of Police Jose Coello during a press briefing. Mother of both women, Teresa de Jesus released a statement imploring for her daughters safe return. “Open your hearts and understand my pain. While there is still nothing on the women’s whereabouts, the disappearance has gained international attention as Alvarado is well-known in pageantry. On Monday, November 17th the International Costa Maya Festival Committee stated “We are saddened by the news of the disappearance of 2014’s Miss Costa Maya Honduras, Maria Jose Alvarado, and her sister Sofia Trinidad. We are praying for their safety and prompt return. We join the Miss Honduras Belleza Nacional Director Eduardo Zablah and the organization in offering our prayers to the young women’s family. Do not lose hope, for miracles do happen.”
Alvarado was scheduled to leave for London, England on Tuesday, November 18th to participate in the Miss World 2014 Pageant.
