On Thursday, April 15th, the Honourable Andre Perez, Minister of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, and his team met with the San Pedro Town community key partners to discuss collaboration opportunities.
Some of these partners included representatives of the San Pedro Fishing Association, San Pedro Tour Operators Association, the San Pedro Tour Association, and the San Pedro Town Council. These groups engaged with Perez and his Chief Executive Officer Kennedy Carrillo and Policy and Planning Advisor Beverly Wade.
According to Perez, the primary purpose was to discuss the opportunities for greater community involvement in critical matters affecting the island populace. One of the highlights was the invitation the minister made to the partners to explore possibilities for the co-management of the Bacalar Chico Reserve north of San Pedro. Perez indicated that this is in accordance with the principles of his ministry of inclusivity and community engagement. He believes that the community must be an integral partner in the management of the surrounding marine resources.
According to the projected view of the current government, it is expected that by 2030, Belize’s Blue Economy will be productive, resilient, vibrant, and contributing substantially to the socio-economic well-being of the country and its people.
The meeting was deemed very productive. The results of this engagement are expected to benefit San Pedro and Caye Caulker, which falls under Perez’s constituency- Belize Rural South.
