Well-known antivirus pioneer and former resident of San Pedro Town John McAfee, 75, was found dead inside his jail cell in Barcelona, Spain, just hours after his extradition to the United States (US) was approved. The tech mogul was wanted in the US for tax-related criminal charges and was also sought by Belizean authorities for questioning in the 2012 murder of his neighbour, American ex-pat Gregory Faull.

The Faull case remains unsolved. McAfee, the main person of interest, fled the island and the country. He ran to neighbouring Guatemala, where he was arrested for illegal entry. Instead of being extradited to Belize, he was deported to the US and lived in the state of Oregon for some time. McAfee denied any involvement in Faull’s murder, who was found dead from a single gunshot behind his head in his house.

Charged for evading taxes while in the US.

Once in the US, McAfee reportedly went back into business and began receiving large amounts of income from several sources. However, reports are he failed to file tax returns from 2014 to 2018 after being charged for evading taxes in Tennessee. He argued that such charges were politically motivated. In addition, McAfee allegedly earned millions from speaking engagements, promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting, and even selling the rights to his life for a documentary.

A year later, in July 2019, he was arrested in the Dominican Republic but later released. He was detained after the country’s security forces suspected the antivirus guru had high-calibre weapons, ammunition, and military-style gear in his possession on his boat.

Arrest in Spain and death

On October 3, 2020, McAfee was arrested at El Prat airport in Spain when he was about to flee to Turkey. After months in a Spanish prison, on Wednesday, June 23rd, Spain’s National Court approved his extradition to the US. The entrepreneur who had once intended to run for president could have appealed the decision. Instead, McAfee feared the extradition because he thought he would spend the rest of his life in prison once he was returned to the US Hours after his extradition was confirmed, McAfee was found dead in his cell block. The cause of his death was allegedly a suicide.
