During a weekend of rainy weather, the clouds parted, and the sun shined during the 19th yearly Saga Spooktacular Fund Raiser. Held on Sunday afternoon, October 27th, at the beachside Caribbean Villas Beach Bar, pets and partners adorned in creative costumes and a crowd of supporters enjoyed an entertaining afternoon of Halloween fun.
There were silent auctions, raffles, and a booth selling Saga shirts and pet accessories to raise funds for Ambergris Caye’s Saga Humane Society. The crowd enjoyed food and drink while DJ Alert kept the festive tunes spinning. All ages joined in the fun costume pageant, from a little princess with her unicorn pup to a canine Yoda with Jedi Master; costume themes showed imagination and clever humor. Judges Kaira Vasquez, Tamara Sniffin, Jo-Ann Moore, and Brent Butcher were tasked with choosing the best in different categories: Team Look-Alike, Funniest, Glam, and Best in Show. After much deliberation and entertaining pageantry, Ben with Bella in her golden evening gown won the Glam category, Krista with Penni, the Tropic Air pilot/airplane, was awarded best Team Look-Alike, Brittney with Kai the Bumble Bee won Funniest. With pups Gidgi and Freya, Amanda, with her family and friends, won Best in Show as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
At the end of the event, guests were thanked for attending and invited to come again next year. Organizers also thanked the countless sponsors who donated everything from raffle, auction items, and supplies to volunteers for their annual support.
The Saga Humane Society is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that seeks to prevent and replace cruelty with kindness to all animals. We strive to provide medical care and shelter for animals in need and subsidize veterinary care to low-income families. This is accomplished through operating the island’s only non-profit veterinary clinic, conducting ongoing spay/neuter and vaccination campaigns, animal adoption, and public education programs. After much fundraising, they are now building a permanent animal clinic/education center in Ambergris Caye, Belize, and continue working toward a long-term solution to end animal abuse, neglect, and overpopulation.
