For the third consecutive year, several businesses that excel in the tourism industry were honored for their outstanding contributions to this vital sector in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. Councilor Ernesto Bardalez organizes the annual event, known as the “San Pedro Tourism Awards. ” Bardalez, along with Mayor Gualberto “Wally” Nuñez and Area Representative Honorable Andre Perez, presented the awards to the winners at this year’s gala.
On Friday, November 22nd, the highly anticipated extravaganza took place at La San Pedrana Bar and Grill inside the Holiday Hotel. The event featured several award categories, including Restaurant of the Year, Hotel of the Year, Small Hotel of the Year, Local Eatery of the Year, Dive Shop of the Year, Tour Operator of the Year, Front Office Person of the Year, Tour Guide of the Year, and Bartender of the Year.
Masters of Ceremonies Gerry Badillo and Miss San Pedro 2024-2025, Alexa Acosta, welcomed everyone to the special occasion and invited Councilor Bardalez to deliver the welcome address. Bardalez pointed out that this year there were 10,386 votes cast for the awards. “This is a testament that we are doing things right,” Bardalez said. “I would like to congratulate each and every nominee in their respective category. I believe that just the fact that you are nominated, it’s already a huge accomplishment.” He congratulated all stakeholders for participating in this new tradition on the island.
Mayor Nuñez emphasized that the event acknowledges the significant contributions made to promote tourism in the region and Ambergris Caye. “The tourism sector is a vital part of our local economy, and in recent years, San Pedro has emerged as a premier destination for travelers seeking unique experiences, cultural and natural beauty,” Mayor Nuñez said. “We honor businesses encouraging sustainable practices and enhancing the visitors’ experience in our beloved island.” Nuñez mentioned that the award ceremony brings together important stakeholders from the tourism industry, including local businesses, government representatives, and community leaders.
Area Representative Perez praised the San Pedro Town Council for this initiative and congratulated the businesses nominated this year. “We are not just recognizing those who are in the forefront, but everyone who sacrifices, works hard and significantly contributes to this important industry,” Perez said. “Each and every one of you is creating what is called a synergy and making things happen.” Perez stated that every effort made by those in tourism enhances the island and country, making them more inviting and visitors’ experiences more memorable.
The winners
After much anticipation, hosts Badillo and Miss San Pedro Acosta announced the winners to loud applause and enthusiasm. The awards presented were as follows: Bartender of the Year: Eddz Ramirez at Hol Chan Villas; Local Eatery of the Year: Island Eats by Sherlz; Restaurant of the Year: Blue Water Grill; Tour Guide of the Year: Nestor Cerpa; Dive Shop of the Year: Ramon’s Village; Tour Operator of the Year: Xsite Belize Sailing and Adventures; Front Office Person of the Year: Tula Ayuso of Ocean Tide Beach Resort; Small Hotel of the Year: Playa de Sala Resort; Hotel of the Year: Pelican Reef Villas.
Following an intermission featuring fire dancer Edgar Gaitan, the event also recognized Einer Gomez, General Manager of Ramon’s Village Resort, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. In his absence, his family accepted the award on his behalf, honoring his significant contributions to the tourism industry not only on the island but across the country as well.
Before concluding the glamorous evening, additional awards were presented. Ocean Tide Beach Resort was given the Love of Nature Award for its dedication to the environment, and the San Pedro Christmas Collection group was honored with the Love for the Community Award.
Furthermore, awards were presented to members of the San Pedro Town Council staff. Armin Badillo received the Male Employee of the Year award, despite his absence. Jaqueline Eiley was recognized as Female Employee of the Year, while Lorena Bardalez and Alex Eck received the Manager of the Year award.
