Island Athletes Honored during San Pedro Township Day

On November 27, 2024, San Pedro, Belize, celebrated its annual Township Day with a lively ceremony at 5PM. This event marks the anniversary of San Pedro’s designation as a town in 1984, highlighting its transformation from a small fishing village into a bustling tourist destination. The celebration, organized by the San Pedro Town Council, features various activities that showcase the community’s rich heritage and growth.

The ceremony began with an awards presentation honoring individuals who contributed significantly to San Pedro’s development. This year, several recipients were recognized for their diverse efforts. These recipients were: Brandon Quijano (Track), Erick Rodriguez (Football) , Kelly Chavez (Football), Izabel Usher (Track), Aysha Acosta (Basketball), Tamilli McCauley (Basketball), Mary Rodriguez (powerlifting), Moises Hernandez (Football), Brianie Saravia (Softball), Dennisa Pineda (Football), Alysha Reymundo (football), San Pedro High Shcool (SPHS) marching band, San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School marching band, SPHS Softball team, Terror Squad, Martin Dawson (martial arts). The event emphasized the importance of community and unity, with speeches highlighting how collaborative actions have transformed San Pedro into a respected municipality in Belize.

Keynote speakers included local leaders who reflected on the island’s journey from its humble beginnings. They expressed gratitude toward the pioneers whose dedication laid the foundation for today’s thriving community. One speaker remarked, “Our fathers paved the way for us to live better lives,” emphasizing the legacy of hard work and resilience that defines San Pedro.
Township Day highlights San Pedro’s transformation and the continuous efforts of its residents to preserve their unique character amid growth and change. The event wrapped up with celebrations that united locals and visitors, embodying the vibrant spirit of San Pedro as a community on Ambergris Caye.
