On December 1st, as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a self-defense workshop for women and children was held at the Lion’s Den in San Pedro. This initiative aimed to empower participants by teaching them essential skills to protect themselves against potential threats, aligning with the activism campaign’s broader goals of raising awareness and combating gender-based violence.
The event drew diverse attendees, including women and children from the local community. The Lion’s Den provided a welcoming venue for these activities, reinforcing its role as a community hub for support and education. Instructor Renee Wentz focused on practical self-defense techniques that participants could quickly learn and apply in real-life situations. Activities were designed to build confidence, enhance physical fitness, and develop awareness of one’s surroundings. The classes emphasized physical techniques and mental preparedness, encouraging individuals to trust their instincts and make informed decisions in potentially dangerous situations.
This self-defense workshop was part of a series of events organized during the 16 Days of Activism, observed globally from November 25th to December 10th each year. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the impact of violence against women and children while promoting initiatives that enhance safety and empowerment.
Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn valuable skills that could improve their personal safety. Feedback indicated that many felt more empowered and confident after attending the classes. The event provided practical training and fostered a sense of community among attendees, highlighting the importance of solidarity in addressing issues related to gender-based violence.
The self-defense classes at the Lion’s Den demonstrate a proactive approach to equipping individuals with tools for personal safety. This initiative is part of a broader movement against gender-based violence during this important period of activism. The next event will be a workshop for men and boys focused on behavioral change. It will occur on Saturday, December 7th, from 9 AM to 3:30 PM in the San Pedro High School conference room.
